Mephisto yani şeytan Tanrı ile girdiği yarış sonucunda bir insanı yoldan çıkaracağını söyler. Tanrı ise insanın ne kadar kötülük yaparsa yapsın kendi içindeki doğruyu her zaman bulacağını savunur. Faust ise Tanrı'yı sorguladığı bir dönemdedir. Mephisto Faust'a farklı şekillerde görünür. Faust onun kötü bir ruh olduğunu anlar ve kendisini kandırabilirse onunla anlaşma yapmayı kabul edeceğini söyler.
