The Night of the Hunter (4KUHD) [Blu-ray]

**** "The Night of the Hunter," included in the Criterion Collection, is celebrated as a cinematic masterpiece that transcends traditional genre boundaries, offering a blend of thriller, crime, suspense, and fantasy. Upon its release, the film struggled to find an audience, largely due to its innovative storytelling and complex themes, which were ahead of their time. Directed by the legendary Charles Laughton in his only directorial venture, the film tells the haunting tale of a preacher, played with eerie charisma by Robert Mitchum, who seeks to claim a hidden fortune, while two children, portraying innocence and resilience, navigate the dangers surrounding them. The film's cinematography and ambiance are remarkable, utilizing black-and-white visuals to create a hauntingly beautiful atmosphere that pays homage to silent films. Laughton’s careful direction shines through, particularly in the subtle yet profound way the story shifts to reveal the world from the children’s perspective. The performance of Billy Chapin as the young boy John is particularly notable; he exhibits a maturity beyond his years, while his sister Pearl, played by Sally Jane Bruce, does not leave the same impression due to her less engaging portrayal. The Criterion Collection DVD is praised for its valuable extras, especially the 2.5-hour feature "Charles Laughton Directs Night of the Hunter," which includes a treasure trove of outtakes and behind-the-scenes footage, providing viewers an intimate look at the film’s creation. It’s evident that Laughton's communication style with his young actors was more compassionate than rumor had suggested, shedding light on the collaborative atmosphere on set. Overall, "The Night of the Hunter" is deemed an essential viewing experience for any classic film aficionado, merging stunning performances with profound thematic storytelling. It is a film that successfully engulfs the viewer into its world, ensuring that its haunting tale remains etched in cinematic history. **
