The graphic novel version of "The Giver" by Lois Lowry is a must-read for all readers, especially YA and adult audiences. The novel draws on famous dystopian qualities and portrays a world where everything is controlled - from population to climate to color. The hero, Jonas, lives in a perfect community where every child is happy. However, his life changes when he is assigned an honor higher than any other. As he gains knowledge about how the world used to be, the reader questions along with him, and learns the value of love, beauty, and even of pain. The world created by Lowry is disturbing on many levels, but particularly because it could be seen as logical. The story is wonderfully realized and completely believable. It should be put on all teenage reading lists.
