Dünya Savaşı öncesi sinemayı karakterize eden eylem temelli sinemadan farklı, duyu-motor zincirinin koptuğu ve bu sayede zamanı dolaysız bir şekilde sunma kapasitesine kavuşan yeni bir imge türü ayırt ediyor. Deleuze’ün zaman-imge kavramıyla karşıladığı bu yeni sinemada temel soru “sonraki imgede ne göreceğiz?” olmaktan çıkıp “imgede görülecek olan nedir?” haline gelecektir. “Pek çok kişi için, felsefe ‘yapılan’ bir şey değil, hazır bir gökyüzünde halihazırda yapılmış olarak bulunan bir şeydir. Ne var ki felsefi kuramın kendisi de, nesnesi kadar bir pratiktir. Nesnesinden daha soyut değildir. Bir kavramlar pratiğidir ve onu iç içe geçtiği diğer pratiklerin ışığında yargılamak gerekir. Bir sinema kuramı sinema ‘üzerine’ değil, sinemanın yol açtığı ve kendileri de başka pratiklere karşılık gelen başka kavramlarla ilişki içerisinde olan kavramlar üzerinedir ve bir nesnenin diğer nesnelere göre bir önceliği olmadığı gibi, genel olarak kavram pratiğinin de diğer pratiklere göre hiçbir önceliği yoktur. (...) Büyük sinema yönetmenleri büyük ressamlar veya büyük müzisyenler gibidir: kendi yaptıkları hakkında en iyi konuşacak olan onlardır. Fakat konuşurken başka bir şey haline gelirler; filozof veya kuramcı olurlar; kuramlarla işi olmayan Hawks için dahi, kuramları küçümser gibi yapan Godard için dahi bu geçerlidir. Sinemanın kavramları sinemada verili değildir. Yine de bunlar sinemanın kavramlarıdır, sinema üzerine kuramlar değil.
